Glow Run

This race was put on by the Betty Boobs, a Relay for Life team.
All proceeds go to cancer research.
My heels were bothering me a bit, so I did a pre-race ice bucket

My little friend decided he wanted to do it too.
Waiting until 8 pm to go made me a little antsy.
I think I went to the bathroom 5 times.
I drove over to the race venue and realized that I hadn't eaten anything since before 5pm.
I pulled into Winco and bought a bag of

Swedish Fish

I grabbed a handful and ate them while the parking attendants directed me to my parking spot.
The race was right next to a golf course.
I found a golf ball when I opened my door.

It was still sunny and hot, so I didn't wear my run shirt.
I opted for a tank, I just don't like getting hot.

But their shirts are cute.

There were tons of awesome glow in the dark glasses, hats, and even mohawks.
Some groups had team shirts.
There weren't any speedo runners, which was strange.

I met up with some girls from the gym.
My plan was to run with them, but it is hard once you get through the crowd, to stay at a slower than normal pace.
And I wanted to see what my legs and feet would let me do.

My injury, that started 2 months ago, was aggravated after my last 5K and I was hoping that I would be alright.

The course was right along the river path and was lined with neon lights.
There were almost 1,000 people on that 2-way trail.
On the way out it was crowded and on the way back it was still crowded.

Time: 24:43

I waited at the finish line to cheer on my friends.
Right when we all met up again, I got runner's stomach.
So, I didn't stay and hang out.
I just went home.

It was a fun event.
It would have been even more fun if one of my family members would have run with me.
Maybe next year.

I put on my compression socks and tried to go to bed.
But I didn't fall asleep until 2 am.

See, I glowed!

Friday Finds

This week's finds all have to do with the kitchen for the most part.

I found a faucet that makes me smile and it works.
I have a sink that works too.
I had the biggest smile on my face when the guys turned the water on.
Then they told me not to use it for a few more hours.

Mosaic glass tile to use as an accent on the backsplash.
It has some stainless steel mixed in to give it a touch on modern style.

In my quest to drink more water, I bought a new water bottle that promises not to leak.
All of my sippy cups for the kids say "leak proof."
I have yet to have one that hasn't leaked.

Glass subway tile 3x6.
FUN!

Countertops.

The best part was how happy my husband was when he saw them.
I loved the sink and he loved the counters.

Tonight is the GLOW RUN!

Have a good weekend!

Run For Fun

The last few days of running have been a lot of fun.
Running used to always be fun, but then this injury made it more work than fun.
Yesterday I did an even split of 4 miles on the AMT and 4 miles on the Treadmill.
The distances on cardio machines aren't always accurate, but it should be pretty close.

Sometimes I need a distraction--music or TV to get me through.
Yesterday, I just ran and watched people.  I didn't need anything extra because I felt so good.
I didn't run particularly fast, but I did keep an even pace and my breathing never got difficult.

Inspiration
If you have ever wanted to run a marathon, but think that it is too hard, read this article.
She is 91!

I think I am going to give it a try.
Once my leg is totally healed, I will be running down by the river this summer.
Now I need to find an awesome destination marathon!

Food
Breakfast--oatmeal and blueberries.

I take a few bites and then my little boy steals it.  He has to use his own spoon.
Mine was too dirty.

Do you think these are an ideal running fuel?

Aren't they the same as these?

SALTED CARAMEL
I haven't tried this flavor, but I heard it is delicious.

Memorial Day...and BEYOND!

My heels have been killing me.
At first I thought it was my shoes and then I thought it was a form issue when I do squats.
I am leaning toward shoes again.
June 2 cannot come soon enough.

Yesterday, I decided that I would just lift upper body and be good.
But I saw that they were offering a Step, Pump, Yoga combo class, so I decided to try it out.
The step part was fun and I didn't have any pain.
But when we did the squat track--Oh!Man!

I had to STOP.
My quads were fine, but my heels were on fire.
I almost took off my shoes, but I didn't think that would really help.
After the squats were done, I was fine.

I'm sure Gail thought I was being lazy.
I like to go extra hard.
I hadn't been to a class in over 2 months.
I just decided I didn't want to hurt myself more.

After the gym, we went to my In-laws for lunch.
The kids love playing together and there were horse rides too.

Today is day 3 of wearing this beige Kinesiology Tape (Mueller).
No one has commented on it, so switching from bright blue to this neutral has done it's job.
I have gone from one piece to 3, trying to support all the different angles.
My calf has felt pretty good.
Now my heels are the worst.

But I was able to run and stay on my toes.
I am not going to lift lower body for a few weeks and see if all of this crud will go away.
More ice buckets.
No ice baths because I still am using my tub to wash dishes.

The counters are supposed to be installed Thursday!
That means I will finally have a kitchen sink, dishwasher, and disposal again.
I might actually enjoy washing dishes.

Girls' Day Out

The girls have been begging me to take them shopping for a few weeks.  Luke went with his Dad to work on the farm, so the girls and I were left to have some "girl time."

Both of the girls needed church flats.  The only place that seems to have styles that both of them like and the shoes aren't too expensive is Payless.  They had a bunch of cute shoes yesterday.  I wish some of the girls shoes would have been in my size. They each got a pair of black flats and some of the no shoe socks.

We went to TJMaxx in search of a dress or skirt and came out with a shirt, socks, and a baby gift. I had a gift card, so everything was free and I had $0.65 to spare. While we were there, I looked at clothes while the girls looked at toys.  Haylee does not like to hold still for very long and does not like to shop when she has to walk.  She was getting really grumpy.  I wondered why she could be so grumpy and it turns out she was hungry.

We went to Red Robin for lunch and she turned into a different child.
I have always had good meals at Red Robin.
This time, it was not very good.
My burger was burnt and it just didn't taste very good.

I even ordered bottomless broccoli and it was so bad, I didn't ask for seconds.
I will not willingly go there again for a while.
Carl's Jr. was just across the street.  Their burgers have never let me down.

Just in case you ever wonder, PF Changs and Tony Roma's seem to know how to cook broccoli.
One time we went to PF Changs and all I ordered was a side of broccoli.

We finally hit the mall.  Old Navy for some shorts and DownEast for a skirt.

Of course we had to stop by Cinnabon.
It was not as good as I had remembered either.
But the girls liked it.

I probably won't take them shopping until school starts.
It was fun to do something together, but shopping was only fun for a few minutes.
Maybe next time we'll go to a movie instead.

Friday Finds

These are a few of my latest discoveries.

I have loved this Smartfood popcorn for almost 20 years.  There are other brands that are good too, but the black bag is usually my favorite.  Now that they have a lower calorie version, I can buy it more than once a year. We had some popcorn from Costco this week too.  It tasted really fresh.  Do you remember the giant bags of bright yellow popcorn they used to sell at Costco?  They were as big as a 3 year old!
I've had trouble getting enough water lately, so I got some Crystal Light water enhancer.
This flavor is good, not too bold.  Just a nice way to make you want to drink your water.
Plain water is better for you, but if you don't drink water at all, give this a try.

I figured this beige K Tape might be a little less conspicuous than the bright blue stuff.  The colors are fun, but they do draw a lot of attention.  I have been wearing it for almost 2 months and I still get questions about it.  I might be wearing this for the rest of my life.  I'll let you know if anyone notices.
I bought it at Walgreens for $10.99.

Life in General

As you can see, we still don't have countertops and I haven't chosen the backsplash.  We are still doing dishes in the bath tub.  There are some funky smells in the house if I don't get the dishes done.
Time to break out the Scentsy!

Little man decided to wake up at 5 am.  That is not an ideal wake time for me. Now I am dragging. Blah!

I don't like shopping, but today I actually thought about going to TJMaxx to see what I could find.  I need to get the kids sandals and I could use a church dress.

2 more weeks until school is out!
This year has flown by. I remember school lasting forever when I was younger. And it taking forever for Christmas to roll around. I will have a 1st grader and a 7th grader.

Haylee has been reading chapter books this week.
She checked out 15 from the library and plans on reading one a day.
So far, she is keeping up with her plan.
She likes to read aloud to herself or to whomever will listen.

Enjoy the holiday weekend!

Back on Track

Well, not on the track.  On the treadmill.  It feels like things are getting back to normal with my legs and my speed.  I felt like I could run today without much effort.  Earlier in the month, 8 minute miles seemed far away.  Today I did 3 in a row!  I was so happy and so sweaty.  I could have done more, but I didn't want to press my luck.

Happy and Sweaty!

After I ran, I lifted a little bit.  Just enough legs to get tired, but not sore.  3 rounds of 12 reps.

Shoe Countdown

I don't think I have ever been more excited for a new shoe to come out than I am for the new Brooks Glycerin 12s.

I cannot wait to try them on and purchase them if they feel like heaven on my feet.

This is the color that I ordered.  I know our shoe store will have another color mix, so if I don't like these on, I can try the purple/teal ones.

At The Gym
I have so much fun talking to people at the gym.

  • I had a discussion about being kind and loving others.
  • I talked to another member about his foot injury.  I checked out his shoes, which were falling apart, and suggested he look into getting some new ones.
  • Then I talked to a friend who just competed in a bodybuilding competition.  She got second and qualified for nationals.
Working out is fun, but without the good people I get to rub shoulders with, I wouldn't love the gym as much.

5 Down, A Million to Go!

Running

I did it!

I got 5.5 miles in today.

It wasn't as hard as I thought, once I tied my shoes up one hole higher.  I never tie the last hole, but with these Nike's, my heels have been hurting.  They have been sliding more than I am used to.  I never got blisters, my heels were just irritated.

When I ran today, I didn't worry about pace.  I went with how I felt.  This is how it worked out.

  • 1.5 miles at 6.8 mph.
  • walk for 1 minute
  • 4 minutes run
  • 30 sec walk
  • 4 minutes run
  • 30 sec walk
  • 12 minutes at 7.0 mph
  • 4 minutes at 6.4 mph
  • 2 minutes at 8.5 mph
  • 5 minutes at 6.8 mph
  • 3 minutes walking
Or something close to that :)

Foodies

Yesterday was a day that I did not eat well enough.  I got enough calories, not enough protein and too much sugar.  Ugh!
Too much sugar makes me feel sick, tired, and bloated.
I am behind on water again.  It's like over the weekend, I don't stay in one place long enough to drink what I need.  And I threw away my Camelbak because it was leaking.

I need more water!

Today was my nieces birthday party.  I had candy and a cupcake.  And then I came home and ate a salad.  I love the chopped salad kits.  But I feel like I need to eat it with a spoon because it is so finely chopped.  Any body else have a salad kit they like?

So, I need some help picking out a new water bottle.  I prefer something I can drink without unscrewing anything. What's your fave?

I see a bunch of RunEatRepeat clicks.  Thanks for checking me out!

Ready, Set, Go!

I keep thinking--this week will be the week when the stars align and I will have no pain and I will be able to run 5 miles at a good pace.

This IS the week that I am going to try to do it.  I probably won't lift very much and I will run more than just a mile at a time.  I am hoping that I can build up my stamina and have fun doing a 5K next week.  It is a fun run, night run, don't take it to seriously run.  But there is always an element of seriousness when you are paying to run.

Almost Summer Break
School doesn't get out until the 6th of June, so I still have some time before I will become full time entertainment and jobs provider.

What do you do to keep your kids active and learning and helping during summer break?

We have a garden and plenty of neighbor friends.  We will take trips to the library and the sprinkler parks.  I am not the master of chores.  I end up doing most of it on my own.  I need to find a system that will work for everyone.

I'd also like to have our 6 yr. old do swim lessons this summer.  I am contemplating taking the kids on a road trip by myself.  I am not sure if I can handle that.  I just wish my sister and brothers would move closer and then I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Almost 12 Years Old
It seems impossible that I have a 12 year old.  She will be in 7th grade next year and will probably start caring more about her clothes and hair and wonder about makeup.  I need someone to move in and teach her.  I am not sure I am ready for all that this year might bring her. She still seems like a little girl, but she is turning into a young woman.  She has started borrowing my clothes and is interested in being involved with school activities. She is becoming her own person.

Do You Ever Just Need a Break?

I have been feeling like I needed a night off for a while.  I love my kids, but at some point in all this construction I found myself not so happy.  I just needed a break.

I had my Mother-in-law take my kids away for the night.  They slept at my mom's, but my MIL was the vehicle to get them there.  I am so grateful.  We were able to go to dinner--Panda Express (eaten in the car) and a movie--Divergent.  It was so nice to go out, come home and go to bed and not worry about getting woken up.

I woke up refreshed and ready for the day.  And for the week ahead.  Things are looking up!

Honesty

When I was paying for my granite this week, the lady that was helping me out said, "Oh, he wrote the price right here."
It wasn't the price I was quoted.  It was lower.  I showed her the price on the list that he had given me and told her that that was the price and then add tax.  She was like, "Wow! You could have saved some money.  Thanks for being honest."  I was kind of surprised by her reaction.  Is there any other way to be?  I am sure people try to get free stuff all the time. I would have felt bad for the rest of my life to save $100.  Not worth it.

Garden

We had to "cheat," (plants not seeds) on the garden again this year.  We are always a little late. Cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, green beans, and an attempt at pumpkins.  It should be a good harvest.  Fingers crossed!

The kids got to go ride on the swather with Dad.
They thought it was really fun.
Working on the farm is such a great experience.
I did hate it when I was younger.
But I learned how to really work.
Not many people get that at a young age.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

Two things in my life have seemed to drag on forever--this injury to my calf and home construction.
But both seem to be reaching their end and I am incredibly grateful that neither was worse.
Because both could have been way worse.

I am still wearing my bright blue tape and it still seems to help.
I even wear it to church with my knee length skirts.

It is going to be in the 90s today, so we are doing a lemonade stand.
Come on down!
The kids always want to do one when it's hot outside.
We might have some competition in the neighborhood.

 Salad of the day.
Asian Salad kit from WalMart.
Prepared with love on my kitchen floor.

Meltdown of the day.

So sad!

Day of House Stuff

I used to think my life would end if I missed a day at the gym. Some days I really need it and other days, it is a choice.

Yesterday, my choice was to get my house done. Searching for a backsplash and a faucet should be fun, but it's a lot of work too.

Kohler K-780
source

I chose a 3x6 travertine tile for the backsplash.

The color is called silver mist.
Some of the tiles are very grey and others are more beige.
The box comes with a mix of tiles, so you don't know what you're going to get.
That's tough for me. I asked if I could pick out the 250 tiles that I wanted.

They said no.

I called to price out a 12" backsplash vs. 18" which would be the whole height. It's like $225 for all the tile.  I'm not sure how expensive the install will be, but for a couple $100 I could get the whole thing done.  Is it worth it?

My sister watched my kids while I went shopping.
This is what I came back too.
Aren't they cute?

Workout:
I am still working on my pull-ups.  My goal for the year is to do them unassisted.  Normally, I use 65 lbs. of assistance.  I tried to see how much I could pull 1x.  I got down to a 20 lb. assist.  I am getting closer and I haven't been doing them regularly.  I just might reach my goal!

Cinco de Mayo Celebration

I know it's not traditional, but at least we celebrated.

Chuck E. Cheese's and Taco Bell.

For all their "work," they each got a bag of cotton candy and little man got a rocket launcher.

It was fun to go play games for a few hours. We went at an odd time, so we had the place to ourselves.

Chuck E. even made an appearance with maracas! Awesome!

Workout:
My Achilles was a little tender today, so I taped my leg.  I was able to lift and run.  And I felt like I got a good sweat.

40 minutes--biceps, triceps, front squats, abs
35 minutes--AMT
2 miles--treadmill @6.5 and 7.0 mph

My next "race" Is May 31. My goal was 12 races this year.  That will be #2.  I am going to have to step it up.

Easy Tabata Treadmill

Today was the first day that I ran without tape and had no pain afterwards.
It is still early in the day, so it might come, but I am hopeful that I will be fine.

My running stamina is pretty low.  It could be that I am out of shape or it could be that I only slept for 4 hours last night.  I was afraid of missing my alarm and woke up at 2 and couldn't really get back to sleep. My bedmate, Luke, likes to roll a lot and sleeping is hard to do once I have been woken up.

I knew I couldn't run any distance today, so I did Tabata style sprints.

Run for 20 seconds, then
rest on the side rails for 10 seconds.
Follow this pattern until the distance reads 1 mile.
Then walk for 2 minutes.

I repeated this for 2 more miles.
My top speed was 9.5 mph
Most of the sprints were at 8.5 mph.

Last week I tried to squat until I couldn't squat anymore.
It took 4 days for my buns and thighs to not hurt.

Today I did bodyweight squats and the leg machines in the gym.
I didn't do heavy weight in hopes that I can do a 3-5 mile jog tomorrow.

We are looking at 3 more nights in the hotel.
It might be longer!?
It feels like we have been out of the house forever.

We have a few more amenities to use before our stay is over. Like hot chocolate and cookies at night.

How was your weekend?

Friday Fun--Where's My Car?

Yesterday was an ordinary Friday. I got the kids up for school, ate breakfast in the hotel lobby, drove the kids to school, and headed to the gym.  When I got there, I dropped Luke in the kid’s room and then started to warm-up.  I wanted a drink, so I got money from my car and locked my door. I even remember double checking that it was locked.  I dropped my keys in the key box on the counter and worked out for 1.5 hours.
I was feeling happy, had a good workout, ready to have a good day and then I went to grab my keys and they weren’t there.  I checked my pockets, looked in the kids room, but I knew I had put them in the box.  I looked up to where I had parked.  My car was not there.  I did a double take or more. And my mouth dropped. I told the front desk girl that my car was gone. She didn’t believe me at first.  I just kept saying, “No, really.  It’s gone! I parked right there.  It’s not there.”
It was 9:30, the last time I saw my car.  I went to get my keys a little after 11:10.  We called the police at 11:15. He showed up 15 minutes later. While I was waiting, I called the bank to put a hold on my account. I just stood in the doorway, looking around.  I figured someone had seen me get money out of my wallet and followed me into the gym. The officer asked for my car description and license plate and then they started looking through the security tape. Within a few minutes, the owner and a gym member had ID’d their suspect.  They found his car still in the parking lot and ran the plates.
A couple of us were staring out the front windows and saw a grey van tear around the corner.  We ran out to see if it was my car.  The guy parked pretty crooked and jumped out of the car holding my keys in his hand.
“I’m on this medication and I took the wrong keys. It’s my medication. I didn’t mean to.”
The lady with me escorted him into an office in the gym where the owner and the police officer could interview him. I looked in the back seat of my car to see if anything was missing. Every thing was tossed out of the diaper bag. But it didn’t look like it had been dug through; more like he was taking corners too fast and it flew out. I had a laptop in the back and it was undisturbed.
He told the officer that he lost his key and got frustrated.  He was on a new anxiety medicine and it didn’t work, I guess. He took a pair of keys, hit the unlock button, looked for the car that beeped and got in.  He came back when it dawned on him what he had done. The car got back at about 11:40.
The only thing he touched, that I could tell, was my Talbots catalog.  He had pulled out a page, written “mowing and edging” on it and folded it in quarters.  The whole situation was so strange. I must have been in shock.  I didn't cry. I didn't go crazy.  At first, I wasn’t going to call my husband.  But I did.  He was just like, "You're kidding, right?" He was on his way when the car came back.  We just sat and talked about how weird it was. Then he checked out the car to make sure it wasn’t damaged.
A medic came to check out the guy—they said he was okay, but couldn’t drive.  He was in cuffs for a while, but they took them off when he calmed down.  They called his wife to take him home because they wouldn’t let him drive. (That's why I am so grateful he was okay.  He really was in no condition to drive). She confirmed that he had changed medications and had been acting strangely for a while.
I’m so glad it all turned out fine.  We will change our credit cards and bank stuff, but other than that we are fine.
For a while, I was shaking when he gave me my keys.  I couldn’t use my phone.  I told my husband, “I bet I could run really fast right now.”
How's that for some Friday Fun? What was your Friday Fun?

Worked Out

April 30

It is the best feeling when I finish a workout and know that I couldn't give anymore.
I have only had a handful of good workouts in the last month.  It makes my day go so much better when I really get a good sweat session.

We will be going to the hotel tonight. Pretty sure I won't be getting much sleep. Little man doesn't always sleep well away from home.

I'm still not sure how long we will be out of the house. I'm thinking until Sunday if they put all the guys they have on my house project, which they won't.

Killer Move of the Day
Front squat--instead of the barbell on your shoulders behind your head, you rack it in front of your shoulders. You can also hug a weight plate or dumbbells pushing against front of shoulders, make sure you hold plate high across your chest. Squat as low as you possibly can comfortably, feet shoulder width apart--toes slightly pointed out. Knees should go out, not forward.
